RUNNERS

2009, INSTALLATION

Runners was created in response to the ongoing dialogue around immigration in the United States. The project draws from a familiar highway safety sign found near the U.S.–Mexico border — an image warning drivers of migrants crossing the road. Over time, this silhouette of a running family has evolved into a loaded cultural symbol, representing both human struggle and political debate.

By recreating the sign’s figures at full scale and placing them in ordinary American settings — from suburban streets to corporate facades — the work removes the image from its original context and invites viewers to reconsider its meaning. Nothing about the silhouette is altered; instead, the shift in environment challenges perception, prompting reflection on visibility, belonging, and the myths surrounding the “American Dream.”

Self initiated project.
